OVERVIEW of the Region

The Normandy region is located at the North-western part of France. It is composed of five French administrative departments: Manche, Calvados, Orne, Eure, Seine Maritime.

LA SEINE  MARITIME:  A  DYNAMIC DEPARTMENT WITH ECONOMIC  ASSETS :

o A rich agricultural potential with favourable  pedo-climatic conditions 

o High population density with 1.2 Million inhabitantso A powerful industrial network with 2 harbours : ROUEN (first European cereals harbour)  and LE HAVRE 

 

 

AGRICULTURE IN  SEINE MARITIME :  A MIX OF ANIMAL AND PLANT PRODUCTION 

Agricultural national deliveries in 2015 :

  • 27%  Cereals  and Oilseeds-protein crops 
  • 25%  Milko
  • 18%  Cattle for meato
  • 14%  Flax and sugar beeto   
  • 8%   Potatoes

INCREASE FIELD CROP HECTARES  LAST TEN YEARS (+ 8% ): 229 900  Hectares

 

At a national level, the Seine Maritime department is the first producer for flax fibre and 5th producer for consumption potatoes

About potatoes 

 

 

In 2014, the total production is about 10120 hectares with 7650 hectares for consumption potatoes and 2350 hectares for seed potatoes.In 2015, the seed production is increasing and reaches 2613 hectares with 123 varieties produced and becomes the first region for seed production in France

COMITE NORD / SIPRE POTATO BREEDING STATION : 




 



The COMITE NORD / SIPRE potato breeding station is located in Bretteville du Grand Caux (Seine Maritime)

The Bretteville station is the variety research facility of the Comité Nord / SIPRE, a regional structure for seed potato growers, which produces 12 960 ha under official control (presented surface in 2015)

The objective is to breed new varieties adapted to new production constraints: economic, environmental and phytosanitary for 3 markets:

  • WARE POTATOES :  Firm flesh, high skin finish standard and good taste quality varieties, earlies  and  Export 
  • PROCESSING POTATOES :  French fries, Crisp, mashed  potato
  • STARCH  POTATOES

France Obtention is the strategy of the FN3PT (French National Federation of Seed Potato Growers) to support the development of the French seed potatoes and new varieties from France for the export market.

It represents the French seed potato sector in the world through : - The French varieties- Quality of the seed potatoes- Know-how in the field, in the lab- Information system and traceability- Quality management- Research, Development and Innovation

 

 

 

POTATO SEED FARM PRODUCER 

 

 

The SCEA La Champagne farm, owned by Mr. Degrendel, is located in Daubeuf-Serville (76110), 15 km away from the Channel coast. It is specialized on seed potato production on loamy soils. Here are the main figures of the farm: 

  • Total area of the farm: 480 ha 
  • Crop rotation: Wheat 210 ha, Seed potato  80 ha, Flax fiber 80 ha, Sugar beet 60 ha, Rapeseed 40 ha, Faba bean 10 ha 
  • Main potato varieties: Bintje,  Marilyn , Challenger , Lady Amarilla, Lady Anna
  • Strains production for all varieties
  • Cooled box stores capacity: 5 800 tons (including 3 200 ton on Aspire system)
  • Number of boxes: 1600 2T-boxes and 3200 650 Kg-boxes
  • Employees: 11 full-time equivalents including 1 crop manager
  • Equipment: 10 tractors, 2 sprayers, 1 set of seeding equipment

CLIFFS OF ETRETAT:

Located on the Alabaster coast, the dramatic cliffs of ETRETAT, seaside resort, has inspired many French painters (Courbet, Boudin, Monet, Corot, Matisse…) and a lot of authors (Victor Hugo, André Gide, Guy de Maupassant, Maurice Leblanc…).Thus, the novel by Maurice Leblanc called  «l’aiguille creuse » (“the hollow needle”) tells about the adventures of the famous “gentleman burglar” Arsène Lupin. 

 

AMONT Cliffs :Not far away from the “Notre Dame de la Garde” chapel is erected the Monument dedicated to the French aviators Nungesser and Coli disappeared in 1927 aboard “The white bird” at their first attempt to air cross the North Atlantic Ocean, non-stop between Paris and New York. They have been seen for the last time in Etretat flying “The white bird”.
